As we enter into the Thanksgiving week, we need to do just that, give thanks. This social experiment we call the United States of America is nearly 250 years old and I feel darn lucky to be a part of it. Because of God we live in a country that is so blessed with natural resources and because of farmers and ranchers we are able to provide food to so many. All of us here at Dunlap Livestock wish you the very best in the 2019 Thanksgiving holiday. So many of our friend’s families lost love ones this past week. To all of you we offer our deepest sympathy and pray for you all, and to all others of you who are grieving the loss of loved ones!

***ATTENTION CALF SELLERS*****
Feed yards are demanding new crop calves have had a complete vaccination protocol. Please visit with your veterinarian. Nearly all our feed yard customers are preferring a modifi ed live series of shots in addition to boosters. The green tag program is time tested & trusted. In addition, a long time weaned, 45 days or longer, appears to be working the best.

FED CATTLE/WEIGH COWS TUESDAY, NOV 19TH: Tuesday’s fed cattle may have been a freckle higher. Good fed cows were strong but the leaner cows have been under tremendous pressure, it’s pretty disheartening when a 100# goat fetches over $200 and poorer 1000# cow brings $300- 400. A market ready goat and a cow yield about the same so that makes their carcass values way out of whack!! I can’t help but be reminded that our very own national cattleman’s group lobbied congress to repeal country of origin labeling. I encourage all of the beef producers who want to bring mandatory country of origin labeling back to call your Senators and congressional leaders. It will take a grassroots effort since we are being fought by our own!! You know our cutout values now are nearly the same as they were 5 years ago when our live prices were signifi cantly higher. We have to work on trying to take some of our share of the food dollar back!

FEEDER CATTLE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22ND: Friday’s markets, especially the feeder board fell out of bed on Friday. The March feeder cattle contract over the last several days has declined pretty signifi cantly. It sure put some pressure on Friday’s calf trade. Let’s hope the board decides to start behaving itself. I try not to put too much into reports, but Friday’s cattle on feed showed signifi cantly larger placements in the fall than a year ago. The trade was anticipating a large placement fi gure so we’ll see how that shakes out over the next few months. Still decent weight 650# steers fetching near $1000/head. Cow slaughter remains huge and higher than the last couple of years. The percentage of hfrs in the fed cattle processing mix is way up. More cows to market and less hfrs bred and kept back should start showing up sometime soon. Here are some reports from Friday’s feeder auction.
